With as many as 360,000 persons affected, hearing loss become common in Singapore and as ageing population, this prevalence is expected to increase. Modern hearing devices have the potential to restore hearing in most hearing-impaired, however hearing devices alone are not always sufficient to help comprehend television speech. Watching TV together is a very good activity for family bonding. However, hearing-impaired listeners tend to increase the sound level of TV and sound systems at an uncomfortable level for normal listeners, which discourage such social activities and interactions to take place among family members.

Personalized Assistive Listening System is developed using a unique and novel combination of parametric loudspeaker and conventional electro-dynamic loudspeakers developed by the NTU team. By using the combined sound projection of the parametric and conventional loudspeakers, higher sound clarity at predefined frequencies (especially in speech recognition) can be heard by hearing impaired listeners. By associating these predefined frequencies with the hearing impairment profile of a hearing-impaired listener, our system can be used to compensate the lower sensitivity at various frequencies and improves the auditory experience of the hearing-impaired listener.
